Australia Opens 30,000 Census Jobs For 2026, Drawing US Interest...

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) announced today it is hiring 30,000 temporary workers for its 2026 national census, sparking unexpected interest from American job seekers. The roles, which include field officers, team leaders, and data processors, pay up to AUD $33 per hour (about $21.50 USD) and require no prior experience. The opportunity is trending in the U.S. as remote work options and Australia's strong dollar make the jobs appealing.

Applications opened this week for the August 2026 census, Australia's first digital-first national count. Positions are available across all states and territories, with remote work possible for some administrative roles. The ABS confirmed U.S. citizens with valid Australian work visas are eligible to apply, though most positions require in-person work.

Social media platforms like Reddit and LinkedIn show growing American interest, with many citing Australia's higher minimum wage compared to similar U.S. census jobs. The U.S. Census Bureau paid $15-$22/hour for its 2020 count, while Australia's current minimum wage is AUD $23.23 ($15.20 USD).

Demand appears strongest in California, Texas, and New York, according to Google Trends data. Recruitment experts note the jobs could appeal to digital nomads and those seeking short-term international work experience. Applications close June 30, 2026, with training beginning early next year.

The ABS told reporters today they've received over 5,000 international inquiries since posting the jobs, though most applicants are still expected to be Australian residents. The census will determine parliamentary representation and guide AU$500 billion in annual government spending.
