Pakistan Super League Gains US Attention Amid Crickets Rising Popularity...

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is unexpectedly trending in the U.S. today as cricket's popularity surges among American sports fans. The T20 tournament, currently in its playoff stage, has drawn attention due to high-profile performances and growing accessibility on streaming platforms.

Cricket viewership in the U.S. has increased by 38% since 2023, according to Nielsen data, fueled by Major League Cricket's debut last year and the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup co-hosted by America. Several PSL matches have been broadcast on Willow TV, the primary cricket channel in the U.S., with Wednesday's Qualifier between Islamabad United and Multan Sultans drawing record stateside viewership.

The league features international stars like Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi alongside emerging U.S. talent. Ali Khan, the Ohio-born fast bowler who plays for Lahore Qalandars, has become a particular focus for American audiences. His participation marks the first time a U.S.-developed player has featured prominently in the PSL.

Social media engagement around #PSL2026 spiked 72% among U.S. users this week, according to Twitter analytics. The trend coincides with ESPN's recent acquisition of ICC tournament rights and Paramount+'s expanded cricket coverage. Sports analysts attribute the interest to cricket's growing immigrant fanbase and curiosity from mainstream sports viewers.

Pakistan Cricket Board CEO Salman Naseer told reporters Thursday that PSL viewership in North America has doubled since 2025. The league's timing - with matches airing in U.S. morning hours - has made it accessible to working professionals and students. Several universities, including UCLA and NYU, have reported increased PSL watch parties among their South Asian student associations.

The tournament's semifinals begin Saturday in Karachi, with the final scheduled for April 27. U.S. fans can stream matches via the Cricket Exchange app or Willow TV's subscription service. With cricket set to debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, American interest in international leagues like the PSL is expected to keep growing.
