West Tigers Stun Raiders In NRL Thriller, Sparking US Fan Buzz...

The West Tigers pulled off a dramatic 24-22 victory over the Canberra Raiders in Friday's NRL clash, drawing unexpected attention from American sports fans. The match, played at Sydney's Campbelltown Stadium, went viral in the US due to a last-minute try by Tigers rookie Lachlan Galvin that sealed the win.

Australian rugby league is gaining traction stateside after ESPN's expanded NRL coverage this season. Friday's game trended on US social media as highlights of Galvin's game-winning play and Jarome Luai's sideline conversion circulated. The Raiders had led 16-6 at halftime before the Tigers' second-half comeback.

American viewers particularly responded to the physicality and fast pace of NRL play, with #NRLonESPN trending in US markets. The timing helped - the match aired live Friday evening Eastern Time, a rare prime-time slot for Australian sports in America. Sportsbooks reported increased US wagers on NRL games this weekend.

The Tigers' victory moves them to 3-3 on the season, while the Raiders drop to 2-4. Both teams feature several players familiar to US audiences from rugby league's growing international presence. Canberra's Jordan Rapana played in the 2025 US All Stars exhibition match in Las Vegas.

NRL CEO Andrew Abdo confirmed the league is monitoring US interest for potential future games stateside. "The response to this Tigers-Raiders match shows there's genuine curiosity about our sport in America," Abdo told reporters Saturday. The league already plans to return to Las Vegas in 2027.

US-based rugby league analyst Mike Gee noted the timing coincides with the NFL offseason. "American football fans are craving contact sports right now," Gee said. "The NRL's hitting a sweet spot with its ESPN deal and these dramatic finishes."

The Tigers face the Bulldogs next Sunday, while the Raiders take on the Broncos - both matches scheduled for US-friendly timeslots. With over 500,000 US viewers reportedly tuning into Friday's thriller, the NRL may have found an unexpected new audience.
